Fertilizer Innovation and Products
Investing in innovation to strengthen productivity, sustainability, and Canada’s leadership in global food security.
Innovating for Farmers and Food Security
Innovation in fertilizer products is essential to advancing sustainability, crop productivity, and resilience. New technologies are helping farmers maximize nutrient uptake, strengthen crop performance, and reduce environmental impact. This includes enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs), which use technologies that help nutrients more effectively get to crops, and supplements, which are products that don’t provide plant nutrients directly, but instead offer supplements that can complement nutrients and act indirectly to improve conditions.
These innovations support more precise and efficient nutrient use, improving yields while minimizing losses to air and water. By investing in and supporting science-based product development, Canada can equip its farmers with the tools needed to produce more food, more sustainably, for a growing global population.
Key Issues

Streamline Product Approvals
Canada’s regulatory system must evolve to keep pace with innovation. Fertilizer products face rigorous oversight from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), yet recurring delays and backlogs in approvals hinder the timely introduction of new, sustainable technologies. Establishing a 90-day service standard for CFIA approvals would give farmers faster access to the tools they need to stay competitive. In addition, creating a streamlined, science-based pathway for the provisional registration of products already approved in two trusted international jurisdictions would accelerate innovation and ensure Canadian farmers benefit from proven, world-class solutions.
